Lace

Traditional lace has associations with the femenine, delicate, pretty clothing and interior forms. In my past work I have studied Ayrshire lace or needlework from the Scotland and worked with its imagery and sensibility in tapestries, drawings and digital prints. In recent experiments I am working with traditional lace, but changing some elements to shift the image away from its normal associations. In this piece I have used a commercially made lace as a stencil and worked through the lace with gouache paint, creating the lace by the colour in the negative form. I am interested in how this can suggest being there and not there, a sense of lightness.
